My Top Ten Movies of the Year 2009

Happy New Years everyone! I haven’t posted lately, but I’ve been contemplating this list which is the most reason I haven’t posted lately. So here it is. Its been a tough year. I haven’t seen every good movie out there, but I’ve seen plenty enough to make this list. Remember this list? Yeah I didn’t see everything. I didn’t see 9 so there’s no excuse, but Sherlock Holmes just came out, so its a good excuse for not seeing it yet. Well anyways here’s my list of the best movies I saw this last year:

10.) Watchmen and Terminator Salvation

Its a stretch, but this is a bit of a tie. Not to say I was disappointed with these movies, not the case, but I liked them both equally. And I needed a say for both. Watchmen, well it is definitely the best way we are going to watch this in a live action version. Its not accurate, but it doesn’t have to be. I understand how Snyder may have thought a [removed due to comic book spoiler] wouldn’t work for the ending of the movie. And how [movie spoiler] would fit into the movie. Yet the [removed due to comic book spoiler] may have worked too. What we see is what we get and still makes a great comic book adaptation. Now with Terminator Salvation. Not everyone liked it. I say: its very underrated. Its a movie filled with references to the other movies, which I respect highly. Ok so it may be a weird time in the future to have the movie being set in, which is 2018 a reasonably uninteresting time in Terminator timeline, but it has importance which is the start of the T-800 machines and the Cyborg/Android (debatable) which is Marcus Wright. A terminator which is unheard of in John Connor’s life being told for years of his fate with Skynet. Its a thorn in John Connor’s side which doesn’t last long, but either way its good to see a Terminator movie set up the next movie for more major events. Which means Time Travel and laser gun fighting.

9.) Public Enemies

Like i said, I’m a sucker for these movies. Seeing this in Digital format was like I was actually there. This movie was filmed with a Digital camera so it looks nice to watch in theaters. And probably on Blu-ray. The movie also stars Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, whom, well as he says: He robs banks. And apparently that’s what its meant to be a celebrity back then kids. It also stars Christian Bale as good cop Melvin Purvis. Christian Bale wasn’t really a main actor, but for some reason its advertised like it is. Well either way, if your interested in a movie on how it feels like your actually there, here’s a movie to take you back to the past.

8.) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

This is the best Harry Potter movie yet. It took me a while to say that since I still really enjoy the wizard battle at the end of Order of the Phoenix. I read about what would happen with this movie, but I still really enjoyed the visuals and how it might be darker than Prisoner of Azkaban. There’s not much else I could say about this movie. But if you grab a copy of this movie on DVD or Blu-ray you get a teaser trailer for Deathly Hallows; which is a 2 parter. Its never going to end. At least its a better fan craze than Twilight. I respect it better than Twilight, lets say that.

7.) Avatar

Just saw this the other day, so its still pretty much fresh in my mind. It may not have the best storyline this year, but its got the best visuals in my book. Its the best film to utilize 3-D this year and its the best Live Action 3-D film of all time I think. I mean, what’s better? Friday the 13th Part 3-D? I wont start anything, but its really amazing in 3-D. The storyline…well, I still feel, after bothering my relatives with it, that I’ve heard of it somewhere before. I still think its Battle for Terra; Delgo; and Smurfs put together. And Ferngully thrown into that mix. By the way: it isn’t that bad. I just made it sound extremely bad, don’t quote me on this.

6.) Zombieland

This is one movie I didn’t think I would see this year. I just came back from afar and came back to see this movie. Which was a nice treat and comes high into my list. Apparently Zombies are now funny. The craze started with Shaun of the Dead and continues with Zombieland. I haven’t seen Adventureland, but I would imagine is like this, but without the Zombies. The movie is also important to watch in the case of a Zombie outbreak, giving a list of rules to live by to survive the zombie world. Its also got a great cameo, which even if you know who it is, its still the one of the greatest cameos I have seen in a long time.

Honorable Mentions:

A few to mention is Drag Me To Hell, Night of the Museum 2, Funny People, and Evangelion 1.0. Drag Me To Hell is Sam Raimi’s return to horror and he still has that horror touch. Way to go Raimi. I mention Night of the Museum 2 since I enjoyed it more than a few movies I saw this year. But it was also somewhat annoying. You know, scratch that, I’m adding it to another section. Funny People was a hit and miss, too long yet very funny. And Evangelion was in our theaters this year so I am going to say it counts, but not enough to count in my list.

Dishonorable/Honorable Mentions:

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Night of the Museum 2. This is the hit and miss section. They were both equally good and equally bad. What made Night of the Museum 2 good was that people will probably enjoy only one thing in this movie. Ask me in person what this is.

5.) The Hangover

After watching this movie, I felt like I had a laughter hangover. Probably a bad pun, but its the best comedy this year had to offer. And not much to say after that so just watch it if you haven’t. Also its not for everyone, if your not into all the f-bombs and whatnot. If you don’t mind it so much, its still a must-see.

And Now its getting harder to rank em’…

4.) Inglourious Basterds

I don’t honestly have good reason to put this fourth, but it still ranks high on my list. Along with the other 3 movies, these are among the best to see this year. Quentin Tarantino’s WWII flick is no exception. Saw this one on DVD out of the blue and didn’t expect to see it. Which is another treat this year. Compared to other Tarantino’s past movies, this one is a bit more tame. There’s more buildup to scenes which leaves you with a ton of suspense, but plenty of satisfaction.

3.) Star Trek

J.J. Abrams breathes new life into this decaying franchise by reintroducing old characters into a new adventure. I won’t say more than that to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but if you aren’t a Trek fan, it doesn’t really matter. You may become one with this movie.

Now the next two movies, were a tough decision…but here goes:

2.) Up

Was there any doubt that this would end up here? Any Pixar movie will probably always be on my list on any year (except for Cars, but I digress), but this can probably be described as the most emotional Pixar movie yet. Its a real tear jerker for any animation fan. You may cry during sad times, but you may also cry during the good times. Its that great of an animated movie. This is one I highly suggest you see.

I really liked Up, but I think this one deserves it on a different level:

1.) District 9

I don’t think I have been so wowed in a movie theater in this long of time from a movie. Especially from a Sci-Fi movie either. This movie really did come from nowhere, coming from the two people who were about to make the Halo movie. Boy, those movie studios who passed on the Halo script must really regret doing that after this movie. Its been awhile since a Sci-Fi movie has been this, well, extraordinary. It combines past 80’s movie gore with top of the line acting. And the main actor has never acted. That guy deserves the Oscar this year. I barely even heard about this movie until a few weeks before it came out and I didn’t even think it would be this good. I order you to watch this movie. Watch it now.
