Blade of Thrones

Well, looks like schools over for me for the summer. I look forward to a good amount of things this summer as well. Got three movies on my watch list that I cannot wait to see. I also saw Avengers, I didn't get to talk about that a lot and you probably won't see me do that here. Ok, I lied; Avengers was fantastic. And that's it. I think we have heard enough of The Avengers already. I saw it twice, second time was ok. Unfortunately the IMAX 3D hurt my eyes for a while and gave me a migraine. Not fun. Not to say the movie wasn't though. Just never do converted 3D, even if it is for a movie like that.

  • As a shout-out to a comrade, Happy two days belated Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones day! I don't exactly remember what I thought of the film when I first saw it. I remember I liked Jango Fett, start of the Clone Wars on Geonosis, Yoda doing his CGI thing (kinda), and a bunch of other foreshadowing moments. I don't know about the Anakin and Padme thing though. It probably always creeped me out. One thing I do remember was the rumors about the movie title. I speculated with my cousin on potential movie titles. All probably being more terrible than Attack of the Clones. The Clone Wars should have just been the definitive title. Instead we got a TV show doing everything awesome the movie didn't do. I think we also speculated on the First movie's title probably thinking of titles way better than The Phantom Menace. But with Revenge of the Sith it was a nice homage to Return of the Jedi, which was almost Revenge of the Jedi to you non-Star Wars geeks out there (A time before Lucas' mind lapsed). We didn't find anything wrong with that one.
  •  Blade Runner has officially gotten a sequel. How I feel about this; well, no idea. Ridley Scott is back as well as the original writer. I guess there's nothing really to worry about then. Prometheus is looking pretty promising, even if I know most of the plot by now. You have to hate the internet sometimes. While we are on that note: Please avoid the international trailer. Even in those circumstances, I am really glad its gotten an R rating like it was fully intended. If this movie lives up to Ridley's Sci-fi legacy we have been waiting to see return on screen for years, then I'm sure the Blade Runner sequel will be an equally welcoming return. I just hope Ridley can make some new things after this. I'm sure Ridley was more movies on mind related that he has been wanting to try for years. Also on a related note: Bring back Vangelis.
  •  I've recently gotten hold of the first season of  the Game of Thrones. Which are video files, but still in HD and completely legal this time. Well, mostly. Anyway, no idea where this will go. Haven't really seen a premium cable show since Dexter and only seen the first season. Which will be my only season. There's reasons. Back to Game of Thrones. I saw about maybe 10 minutes and it looked pretty good. I plan to see it all during summer along with a ton of other shows.
  • E3 is around the corner, while I didn't get my ticket I still plan to cover most of the important things that come out of the conferences. I think probably the thing I don't want to be announced are Next-gen consoles. We don't really need them. It was pretty expensive to get the consoles we have now. Although, Nintendo desperately needs a new console now. I really don't blame them. I barely touch mine and I am kinda embarrassed to admit so. I actually want to play games on a Nintendo console more than an Xbox or PlayStation. I miss the Nintendo experience. I also plan to get myself a 3DS soon as I miss playing portable Nintendo games as well. I never look forward to anything PlayStation has to offer anyways. I always watch each year in anticipation for a new Kingdom Hearts game, a sequel this time, or news on the next Team ICO game. I especially don't want to watch for that stupid Smash Bros. clone. It may be just Xbox and Nintendo this year. Here's hoping to some good surprises and just a good E3 overall.

Compare it to the old Alien Trailer. You'll hear and see a few familiar things:

Top 10 Anticipated Movies for the Final Year of Earth: 2012

Yeah, I know its early, but there’s way too many movies to talk about for next year. Its [probably] not the final year of Earth, but Hollywood seems to think it is for all those sweet movies coming next year. Lets start with ten:

10.) Arrietty

Its not directed by Hayao Miyazaki, but its another amazing looking Studio Ghibli film. Lets see what they can do on their own.

9.) Gravity

One reason: Alfonso CuarĂ³n. A great director that makes any genre his own. Also did you know he directed A Little Princess? I kinda have this love/hate with the movie. I kinda love it more knowing he directed it. Anyway, Gravity will be a Science Fiction movie and the previous one he directed was Children of Men which was a spectacular movie even though it was greatly depressing. Great Michael Caine cameo though. Guillermo Del Toro said its mind-blowing and I will believe in anything that dude says. Oh, and Alfonso also directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

8.) World War Z

Based on the popular Zombie book by Max Brooks this one should be an interesting one to watch. I haven’t really finished the book yet, (Its got a weird storytelling) but it should translate well into theaters. Also some weird stuff has been going on the set including actual real guns which were mistaken for prop guns was almost used. Also a leaked 10 minute scene shows promise which was filmed all in one shot.

7.) Django Unchained

(That picture is from Sukiyaki Western Django by the way, go watch it!) Quentin Tarantino has been wanting to do this one for years. He has talked about this project ever since he has started directing movies. This one is a western and seeing as he has many great films on his roster this one will no doubt be another one. The film also has a great cast lined up.

6.) The Amazing Spider-Man

I was disappointed by the reboot. I’m already missing Sam Raimi, but here we are. New actors, new Spider-Man, and a slightly altered story. My only hope is if they bring back J.K Simmons as J.J. Jameson. It doesn’t matter if he was in the other movies. There is absolutely no one else to fill this role. Get him back! Other potential stuff for this movie: Real life web-slinging, (I’ve been told they did as little CGI as they could here. Could be good) Andrew Garfield is being incredibly nerdy about the role (a dream come true apparently), Emma Stone, and it was filmed at my old High School. Sweet. Also Spider-Man movie based Video Games are actually good (Except for the 3rd one). So there’s that.

Dishonorable Mentions:

Titanic 3D: Watching a real-life tragedy, a young Leonardo DiCaprio (We’ve all seen or heard about it by now) freeze to death, and a naked Kate Winslet in 3D? Really? I understand Star Wars, but this? Did you not think this one through James Cameron?

The Three Stooges: What happened with this movie? It was going so great until Fox took over and now it looks like something similar to Alvin and the Chipmunks, Smurfs, or a Garfield Live Action movie. Three Stooges doesn’t deserve this. Why ruin the classic slapstick trio Fox? Why destroy classic franchises with your death touch?

Battleship: Watch the trailer. Based on the classic board game by Milton Brad- No I’m sorry. As much as that is true; it just isn’t. Its so wrong…Best part about the movie is Liam Neeson. It’s all that it has going for it…I hate you sometimes Hollywood…What the…Rihanna?

5.) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Guillermo Del Toro may have stepped down, but here comes Peter Jackson back in the directors chair to helm the prequel to his much praised (and rightly so) mega Trilogy: “The Lord of the Rings”. So far it’s a bit of a mixed bag with the Production photos showing up so far. But this is what Peter Jackson does best so I will do my best not to judge. Reminder: This is another two parter movie. This is Part One.

4.) Brave

Once named “The Bear and the Bow”; here’s the next project from Pixar. Not so much hype so far as all we got so far is a teaser in which we see a red haired girl shoot an arrow at a grizzly bear. Its not exactly selling the movie (As beautiful as she looks), but hey its Pixar. I expect many good movies from them. At least its not a Cars sequel.

3.) The Dark Knight Rises

Here it is. The last in the trilogy of Batman films by Chris Nolan is greatly hyped. I am also doing my best to avoid any set scenes from the movie. I know too much already though, even seeing a scene that is a major plot point. The biggest thing I’ve seen though is probably the worst, mostly because of how integral to the story it is. Please avoid all photos as you can. Catwoman photos are fine though. They can never be avoided. Try to avoid Bane, though. Mostly because of the people who whine about it. He looked great in the teaser so there’s no need to worry. Everyone will watch it, it will be incredible, it will (probably) be the biggest box office phenomenon ever, so everyone stay calm and carry on.

2.) The Avengers

For the same that can be said for The Dark Knight Rises, the same can be said for The Avengers, even if there isn’t much to watch anymore as most scenes filmed outdoors have been finished apparently. There’s a lot going on with the filming, but again everything is spoilery. Which is why I won’t say much but avoid photos and rejoice that Joss Whedon is directing. Oh, and enjoy the trailer in one of my older posts. So why isn’t this number one?

Honorable Mentions that didn’t make the list:

Before we get to number one, here’s some other movies to look forward to:

Dredd - Its another Judge Dredd movie. Lets just hope he doesn’t take off his helmet this time and won’t be a bad movie.

Men in Black III - Didn’t care much for the second movie. Let’s hope for a better outing for this movie.

GI Joe 2 - We got a different director for this one and will be treated as somewhat as a reboot to forget the last one.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence - (See GI Joe 2 description)

Totall Recall - Nothing much can be said about this one, but Bryan Cranston will be in it and its a reboot of an already good Sci-fi movie. Its more of a wait and see type of movie.

GhostBusters III - I don’t know if this will make it in time for 2012 or if it will actually be made. Bill Murray may or may not be in it and that’s all we really know.

Star Trek Sequel - Also may not make it to 2012 as well. But hey, reboot was awesome so this one should be as well.

Arrested Development The Movie - Apparently its finally happening. But its more likely coming 2013.

1.) Prometheus

Better Question: Why is this number one? Well, for one thing its directed by Ridley Scott. Another thing: It looks and sounds completely amazing. Ridley Scott returns to his Sci-fi roots as he helms a prequel to his Alien franchise. As boring as that sounds, it has very little to do with the Aliens we all know and love. In fact they will have very little screen time and will look (supposedly) completely different. This film does feature an alien, but a specific alien. Which is that of a very much alive space jockey. This one. Also it will look incredibly creepy as it will be shown as a full animatronic. Thank god. Also something about interspecies rape and a bunch of other insane and crazy stuff is rumored to be in the script. Here’s a small synopsis: “A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”
